Something in the Dirt (2022)

A BLOODY ASYLUM SPOILER FREE REVIEW OF THE NEW RELEASE FROM XYZ FILMS AND RUSTIC FILMS

The fifth feature from Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson (RESOLUTION, SPRING, THE ENDLESS, SYNCHRONIC). And the masters of modern cosmic horror deliver yet again another unique genre film.

When neighbours John (Moorhead) and Levi (Benson) witness shocking supernatural events in their Los Angeles apartment building, they realise documenting the paranormal could inject some much-needed fame and fortune into their humdrum lives.

Moorhead and Benson smash it again with another unique cosmic horror. Bringing something genuinely different to the found footage and mockumentary genres as science collides with the supernatural in a haunted house movie as only they could envisage.

Returning to a contained approach similar to their debut feature RESOLUTION necessitated and inspired by co-vid restrictions. Due to this for the first time since THE ENDLESS they play the leads, and superb they are too. Producer David Lawson was the only other crew on set with all three wearing multiple hats.

SOMETHING IN THE DIRT shows that with a foundation of a great script, again written by Benson, and a dose of ingenuity there is no need for a Hollywood budget. Simple yet complex, and profound, brimming with humanity that treats the audience with intelligence.

A masterclass in immersive, engaging, contained low budget film-making.

INSIDE No 9: THE BONES OF ST. NICHOLAS (2022)

MY BLOODY ASYLUM VIEWING PLEASURE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON EVENING

Two of the best writers on the planet Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith return in festive style with their imaginative, eclectic anthology TV series and this M.R. James inspired Christmas ghost story.

Dr Jasper Parkway (Pemberton) has booked an overnight stay in a reputedly haunted church. However, much to his annoyance he is soon joined by unwanted guests.

Not only wonderfully writing every episode Pemberton and Shearsmith also appear in each one alongside some of the very best actors from the UK, of which their characters are always created specifically for them. This time out they are joined by Simon Callow.

With THE BONES OF ST. NICHOLAS Pemberton and Shearsmith yet again deliver an enthralling, and this time creepily scary, 30 minute mini movie. Brilliantly realised and backed up by a screenplay with well rounded characters that wonderfully inhabit an engaging storyline which culminates in very surprising fashion, as has come to be pretty much expected from most installments of this phenomenal series.

M.R. James would no doubt be impressed to know his inspiration lives on in such pure unadulterated fashion, yet with a contemporary spin.

INSIDE No 9 as a whole cannot be recommend highly enough, containing some of the best horror, among other genres, of recent years.

THE BONES OF ST. NICHOLAS really is a good place to start for those who have yet to experience this amazing series.

Fans will well know they are in for a Christmas treat.

Now available on BBC iPlayer.
